Nigerians voted on Saturday for state governors in the first of two elections which should lead to the first fully democratic transition in Africa's most populous nation and top oil producer.
The vote at state level is a test of the strength of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) and will give Nigerians an idea of what to expect from presidential polls in a week. Voting began hours late in many regions and turnout was uneven.
In the largest city Lagos and many other parts of the country, elections took place normally with complaints focusing on identification and technical issues. There were violent protests at three places in the oil producing Delta State due to an absence of ballot papers.
