Necessary arrangements have been finalised for the inaugural ceremony of USAID Sialkot district office. The inaugural ceremony would be held here on Tuesday and it is expected that Sialkot district Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema would be the chief guest on the occasion.
USAID sources told Business Recorder here on Sunday. The Urban Institute is implementing the 'District That Work' (DTW) project and USAID Pakistan awarded $26 million to Urban Institute for launching of the project. The basic objective of the project is to enable the local government to improve management system for better service delivery.
The "District That Work" (DTW) project will work in nine different selected districts in four provinces of Pakistan. In the initial phase the programme will be carried out in Manserhra (NWFP), Khanewal and Sialkot in (Punjab), Sukkur and Dadu (Sindh) and Lasbela in Balochistan while three more districts will be included in second phase of the project.
The project will engage key stakeholders, the district administration, and district council. Civil society, community based organisations providing each specific set of skills and support based on expressed needs to help district functioning efficiently.
The project will help in capacity building of the district administration in financial and non-financial management; find new options for own source revenue generation, achieve improved budgeting, financial management and compliance with applicable rules and achieve improved compliance with accounting and audit requirements.
The project will help district council in better understanding their rules and responsibilities under 'Provincial Local Government Ordinance' and work with selected monitoring committees to help them develop skills necessary for effective monitoring. The project aims to help the local government to become more successful in its vision to be participatory and representative. The project will work with community based organisations and civil society based organisations helping them become part of the district's decision-making process.
