Religious extremism is a great threat to national development, and the people should play their role in checking it in the larger interest of the county. These views were expressed by National Assembly speaker Ameer Hussain.
while addressing a function organised by Anjuman Gojran, Faisalabad, here to distribute Major Tufail Shaheed Scholarships among talented students of his clan.
He said that Pakistan is the homeland of millions of Muslims living in this country. "The ultimate objective of the creation of this country was to develop an enlightened and progressive Muslim State," he said.
He said that some seminaries are instigating young students to resort to negative activities, while the government has been playing its role for their reformation by introducing scientific subjects in various religious schools.
He said that Islam is a religion of peace and tranquillity, and people should understand and practise it in its true spirit. He said that the government believes in freedom of press, and added that it has allowed new TV channels that are free to appreciate and criticise the government.
The Speaker underlined the importance of education, and said that Anjuman-e-Gojran has taken a positive step to award educational scholarships to talented students of this 'Baradri'.
Muhammad Iqbal, Punjab Health Minister, said that the government was fully concentrating on promotion of education. However, other groups and communities should also play their role in weeding out illiteracy from the country.
Later, Speaker Amir Hussain distributed Major Tufail Shaheed Scholarships among 67 students of the Gojar Baradri.
