Your editorial reflects, rather represents, the unfounded views of those modern and enlightened classes who profess Islam but practically lead un-Islamic lives. Playing with words is an easy exercise, especially when a person is sitting in a place of authority.
Apparently such people are virtually engaged in damaging and crushing the spirit of Islam. Islam is a complete code of life and invariably all the rulers in Pakistan have denied Islam to bloom and play its guiding role. Sorry to say, but as a matter of fact the various rulers have used Islam as a tool for perpetuating their power rather than obeying the commands of Islam. Had they ever shown adherence to the principles enshrined in Quran and Sunnah, Muslim Ummah would have regained the glory of the past.
You have very rightly cited the example of Malaysia and I fully endorse your view that "Malaysia is relatively free of terrorist threat because it is more democratic than others in the Muslim world." President Musharraf would be remembered with great reverence if he paves the way for the restoration of real democracy in Pakistan. Will he do it? We should hope so!
