The City District Government Rawalpindi (CDGR) would utilise Korean technology for the construction of Solid Waste Management Plant in the city to dispose of solid waste, District Nazim Raja Javed Ikhlas said here on Thursday.
Javed Ikhlas and district Nazims of all big cities of the Punjab recently visited South Korea to attend an international workshop on "Solid Waste Management."
They visited the solid waste management plant in the country, which spreads on 550 acres land, the biggest plants of its kind in the world. The workshop was attended by environmental experts and representatives from various countries of the world that shared their knowledge and expertise for managing the solid waste.
Ikhlas told reporters that district government would devise a comprehensive strategy, keeping in view the experience gained from the Korean visit, adding that a modern and sophisticated waste management plant would be installed very soon. He said 600 kanal land have been purchased for construction of landfill site and biogas plant at Losar village near Chak Beli Khan, adding that this would not only help dispose of solid waste but would also generate energy resources in the form of gas.
The district government had already erected boundary walls around the site and would soon start construction of the road leading to the site, the Nazim said, adding that mega containers would be purchased to transport waste from the city to the management plant.
He stressed upon the people to cooperate with the city government in keeping the city clean and advised them not to throw the waste on roads and streets but use the prescribed waste containers for the purpose. He said this would not only save the time of management but would also ensure cleanliness and hygienic atmosphere in the city.
He said that Rawalpindi waste management plant would become model in the province, adding that such plants would be established in all big cities of the province gradually.
