The Judges' Feedback

At the Judges meeting to decide the 2006 winners, the judges evaluated the reports in the light of the criteria of completeness, credibility and communication. The work of the Judges was facilitated by the preliminary evaluation and short-listing of the reports by a committee headed by Mr. Ali Tauqeer Sheikh.
INITIATION OF SUSTAINABILITY REPORTING AWARDS:
The panel of judges supported the proposal to have five categories for ACCA-WWF Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards 2006/2007 namely Best Environmental Reporting Award (Multinational), Best Environmental Reporting Award (Local listed), Best Environmental Reporting Award (Local Unlisted), Best Sustainability Reporting Award (Multinational), Best Sustainability Reporting Award (Local listed) and Best Sustainability Reporting Award (Local Unlisted).
The crteria of judging the sustainability and environmental reports as included in the working papers laid before the judges was developed by the sponsors in accordance with global best practices and in keeping with similar award schemes sponsored by ACCA in several other countries. This was accepted unanimously by the jury.
For ACCA-WWF Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards 2006/2007 a total of twenty five engtires were received and only nineteen entries were short-listed by the short listing committee that met on 26 January 2007 in Lahore.
The first category to be assessed by the Panel of Judges was Best Environmental Report (Multinational). Three reports were received in this category namely BASF Pakistan Ltd, BP Pakistan and ICI Pakistan. BP Pakistan was unanimously selected as winner in this category.
The second category to be assessed was Best Environmental Report (Local Listed). Five reports were submitted in this category namely Attock Refinery Ltd, National Refinery Ltd, Pakistan State Oil, Pakistan Refinery Ltd and Tri-Pack Films Ltd Pakistan Refinery Ltd was selected as a unanimous winner in this category.
The third category to be assessed was Best Environmental Report (Local Unlisted). There were two entries in Best Environmental Report in local unlisted category namely English Biscuits Manufacturing Ltd and Engro Asahi Polymer & Chemicals Ltd Engro Asahi Polymer was selected as a unanimous winner in this category.
The fourth category to be reviewed was Best Sustainability Report (Multinational). Four reports were submitted in this category namely AES Lal Pir (Pvt) Ltd, Pakistan Tobacco Company Limited, Tetra Pak Pakistan and Unilever Pakistan Ltd Pakistan Tobacco Limited was declared the unanimous winner. There was a brief discussion about whether Pakistan Tobacco being a manufacturer of cigarettes be given the Award. It was however noted that the Panel of Judges have to base their decision on reporting of economic, environmental and social actions rather than the ethics of the organisations product.
The fifth category to be reviewed was Best Sustainability Report in local listed category. There were four entries in this category namely Century Paper and Board Mills Ltd, Dreamworld Family Resort, Engro Chemicals Pakistan Ltd and Packages Ltd, Engro Chemicals Pakistan Ltd was selected as a unanimous winner in this category.
There was no applicant this year for Best Sustainability Reporting Award (Local unlisted).
INCLUSION OF PAKISTAN REFINERY LIMITED IN THE PANEL OF JUDGES:
This is the third consecutive year that Pakistan Refinery Ltd has won the Award in Best Environmental Report (Local Listed)( category. The Panel of Judges thus concluded that this win entitles Pakistan Refinery Ltd, a place in the ACCA-WWF Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards Panel of Judges 2007-2008 provided that they continue with the good practice of reporting annually, so long as they remain on the panel of judges. The judges recommended that the sponsors develop a policy for the term of such appointees, which may be fixed for 2-3 years.
FUTURE OF ACCA-WWF PAKISTAN ENVIRONMENTAL REPORTING AWARDS:
The Panel of Judges suggested that as it has been five years since the Awards were introduced, ACCA Pakistan and WWF Pakistan may like to arrange a round table meeting of all present and past judges of Pakistan Environmental Reporting Awards so as to evaluate the Awards and to discuss any issues that might be crucial in designing a future strategy for the Awards.

Like previous years, jury members disclosed their professional involvement, if any, with the competing companies, and following such disclosure, ensured that any relationships did not effect the final decision.

The jury places on record its appreciation and gratitude for the excellent secretarial support provided by ACCA and WWF Pakistan including a preliminary, and confidential, evaluation of the applicants. This should continue in the future.
