The Standing Committee of the Senate on Narcotics Control on Tuesday held its meeting at the Regional Directorate Anti Narcotics Force, Sindh with Mrs Kalsoom Parveen in chair to consider the menace of drug abuse.
The meeting was attended by Senator Abdul Raheem Khan Mandokhel, Senator Muhammad Hussain, Senator Mrs Tahira Latif, Senator Nisar Ahmed Memon, Senator Abdul Raziq, Senator Mir Israr Ullah Khan, Secretary Excise Sindh Iqbal Ahmed Bablani, Deputy Secretary Abdul Sami Khan, Director Excise Karachi Naik Muhammad Qazi and Force Commander ANF Sindh Brigadier Faiz Ul Karim Khan Burki.
The Minister of Narcotics was represented by Secretary Ismail Hassan Niazi and officers working at the headquarters, as well as, the Regional Directorate, Anti-Narcotics Force.
A detailed presentation was given to the senators on performance of the ministry with special reference to Sindh. The presentation gave a detailed account of the performance on both supply and demand sides. The briefing also covered problems caused by precursors.
The senators commended the performance of the ministry and recommended that the strength of the force needs to be increased as per instructions given by the Prime Minister. In this regard, the Finance Ministry needs to gear-up its efforts. It should be ensured that during the recruitment process, full regard be given to provincial quota. Greater emphasis be placed on use of intelligence to counter cultivation of poppy.
