A recent new study advises that consuming yogurt may help ease the symptoms of depression. According to researchers, depression is one of the leading causes of mental disarray affecting millions of people across different age groups.
The study was done by the University of Virginia and it stated that eating yogurt rich in lactobacillus, a kind of probiotic bacteria, may help relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety.
In the study carried out on mice, the researchers learnt that a specific mechanism controlling the lactobacillus bacteria, which affects mood, provided a direct link between the health of gut microbiome and mental health.
For the study however, the team induced depression symptoms in mice to analyze their make-up of the gut microbiome and discovered that the major change was the loss of lactobacillus ergo a state of depressive inception. On the contrary, feeding the mice lactobacillus with their food returned them to an almost normalized state.
"A single strain of lactobacillus, is able to influence mood," lead research, Gaultier observed.
