Unseeded Alexander Waske of Germany advanced to the quarter-finals of the $416,000 Munich Open on Wednesday, beating compatriot Daniel Brands 7-6 7-6. The unseeded, 31-year-old Waske, looking to become the first German winner of the tournament since Michael Stich in 1994, had already knocked out sixth-seeded Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in straight sets in the first round.
Waske faces fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus, a finalist at the 2006 Australian Open, in the quarter-finals. Baghdatis struggled on Wednesday to beat Matthias Bachinger of Germany in three sets, 6-7 6-2 6-4
Top-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany was eliminated in his first match on Tuesday by Sebastien Grosjean of France. Defending champion Oliver Rochus of Belgium was beaten late on Monday by eighth seed Juergen Melzer of Austria 6-2 6-4.
