The reference against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is a judicial matter, which must not be politicised and efforts aimed at creating law and order situation should be avoided.
This was stated by the Chairman Senate Muhammadmian Soomro while talking to newsmen after addressing a National conference on the topic of 'Future of Urdu in Pakistan,' here at Quaid-e-Azam Library on Saturday.
To a question regarding protests and agitation by the opposition, he asked the opposition to avoid moves that may create law and order situation in the country. He emphasised that no such situation should be created that may affect country's investment climate.
Soomro said opposition's protests don't pose any threat to the government. He, however, said that reference against Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is a judicial matter, hence it should be left to judiciary to decide.
When asked about chances of return of Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif for contesting the forthcoming elections, he replied that Election Commissioner of Pakistan would decide the matter under the law of land.
However, he said next general elections would be held in free, fair and transparent manner as per schedule. He dispelled the impression that the country was facing pressure from the US and EU for holding general elections in the country.
Moreover, while addressing the conference organised by literary magazine 'Makhzan', Muhammadmian Soomro said that Urdu, which is our national language, is a symbol of unity and harmony among the provinces. Under the 1973 Constitution, Urdu has been declared as national language, he added. He stated that a parliamentary committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to look into the status of national language. He further said Urdu language has long history and its poetry is a matter of pride. Dr Jameel Jalibi, Mehtab Akbar Rashidi, Amjad Islam Amjad and Inayatulllah also spoke on the occasion.
