Seventeen Judges of the Lahore High Court, 24 former judges of higher judiciary and three from lower courts attended the function of Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) and heard the speech of Chief Justice of Pakistan, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, at Lahore High Courts premises here on Sunday.
Justice Chaudhry was warmly received when he reached Lahore from a hectic journey that took more than 25 hours, commencing from Islamabad on Saturday morning. The Chief Justice of Pakistan was given a thumping welcome by activists of opposition political parties, including PML-N, PPP-P, Tehrik-e-Insaaf, MMA throughout the historic journey undertaken by him and in particular when he entered the provincial capital of Punjab.
There were four centres established by opposition political activists at various places in the city. In entering the LHC premises, the show of Supreme Court Chief Justice was well taken care of by the lawyers' fraternity, gathered thereby in strength unmatched in history.
The serving judges were Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, Justice Mian Muhammad Najam-uz-Zaman, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq, Justice Sh. Azmat Saeed, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali, Justice Ijaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Justice M. A. Shahid Siddiqui, Justice Sheikh Javaid Sarfraz, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Main Hamid Farooq, Justice Jehangir Arahad, Justice Zahid Hussain Bokhari, Justice Sh. Hakim Ali, Justice Khalid Alvi and Munir A Sheikh (Federal Ombudsman).
THE RETIRED JUDGES WHO ATTENDED THE FUNCTION INCLUDED: Javed Iqbal, Muhammad Rafiq Tarar, Mian Allah Nawaz, A.S. Salam, Zia Mehmood Mirza, Aqil Mirza, Sharif Hussain Bokhari, Khalid Paul Khawaja, Karamat Nazir Bhandari, Amir Allam, Fazal-e-Karim, Malik Akhtar Hasan, Mian Nazir Akhtar, Malik Saeed Hasan, Fakharun Nisa Khokhar, Talat Yaqoob, Nasira Javed Iqbal, Mian Aftab Farrukh, Khalil-ur-Rehman Khan, Muhammad Afzal Lone, Sardar Muhammad Dogar, Manzoor Hussain Sial, Abdul Hafeez Cheema and Rai Naveed Hashmi.
An Additional District & Sessions Judge Sadaqat Ullah, civil judges Ahmed Saeed from Lahore and Iftikhar Ahmed from Okara also joined the function.
As many as 7,000 lawyers attended the function, while seating arrangements were made for only 5,000 lawyers.
The Chief Justice reached the high court premises after a long delay due to the welcome given to him at various stations during his journey. He reached the High Court premises on Sunday morning at 8:30 am.
The Chief Justice was accompanied by his counsel Aitzaz Ehsan, Ali Ahmed Kurd, former vice chairman Pakistan Bar Council, Mirza Aziz Akhtar Baig, newly-elected Vice Chairman Pakistan Bar Council, Munir A Malik, President, Supreme Court Bar Association. He was received warmly by the lawyers who carried him on their shoulders. The Chief Justice waved hands responding to the slogans of the bar members in his favour on the occasion.
He also released two pigeons in the function. The office-bearers of the LHCBA and Lahore Bar Association (LBA) presented him a bouquet.
The LHCBA gave him honorary certificate of life membership, a shield, a flag of Pakistan, a copy of original Constitution of 1973 and a poem written for him by a member of the bar.
The office-bearers of Pakistan Bar Council, Supreme Court Bar Association, Punjab Bar Association, Sindh Bar Council, Quetta Bar Council, NWFP Bar Council, representatives of different districts and Tehsils in Punjab, including Bakhar, Okara, Sahiwal, Pattokey, Layyah, Daska, Bahawalpur, Chiniot, Mailsi, Sheikhupura, Jaranwala, Kharian, Toba Tek Singh, D G Khan, Pakpattan, Rawalpindi, Haripur, Sialkot, Kasur, Chunian, Nankana, Shakargarh, Narowal, Dipalpur, Khushab, Sargodha, Multan, Khanewal, Abbotabad, Bhakhar and Chichawattni also attended the function.
ALTHOUGH BAR HAD NOT ALLOWED THE POLITICAL PARTIES LEADERS BUT EVEN THEN POLITICAL FIGURES WHO ATTENDED THE FUNCTION INCLUDED: Zafar Iqbal Jhagra and Ehsan Iqbal of PML-N, Ghulam Abbas of PPPP and Lieutenant-General Hameed Gul (Retd).
