City lawyers on Tuesday gave final touches to their programme to receive Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry when he arrives here on Saturday to address the Malir Bar Association, Karachi Bar Association and the Sindh Bar Council.
Sindh Bar Council has dispatches invitations to all bar councils and association across Sindh asking them to come to Karachi and receive the chief justice at the airport when he arrives here on Saturday, tentatively at 10am.
The chief justice immediately after arriving is scheduled to visit Malir Bar Association where he will address members of the association. From Malir he will proceed to the Karachi Bar Association office to address another gathering of lawyers. His third visit will be to the Sindh Bar Council.
Here the chief justice will deliver an elaborate speech touching upon legal issues that have not been addressed so far. The emphasis, as the organisers of the programme say, will be on how to restore independence of the judiciary and pave way for a democratic set up in the country.
Representatives of lawyers' organisations from all over Pakistan are invited to attend this meeting. Special arrangements are being made to make the entire event a success.
Aaqil Lodhi, chairman of the human rights committee of the Sindh High Court Bar Council said that the Malir Bar Association, the Karachi Bar Association, the Sindh Bar Council and the Sind High Court Bar Association were making arrangements separately. This would facilitate better arrangement and the meetings would be properly organised.
He said that after the announcement of suspension of the hearing of the reference district courts and high court functioned as usual. There were neither strike nor token hunger strike to protest against the suspension of the chief justice or reference against him.
Aaqil Lodhi said that reports from the interior of Sindh also showed that there were normal working of courts at all levels.
