Punjab police have detained more than 1,000 PPP activists from the province to avert more rallies in support of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, PPP leader Khawaja Rizwan Alam allegedly said on Tuesday.
Talking to newsmen here, he said that provincial home department had issued arrest warrants of the party activists, who had now been detained in various jails, including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Sahiwal, Mianwali, Sialkot, Gujranwala and Faisalabad.
He slammed the government's double standards over holding of rallies and said that on one hand the PML leaders were holding pro-Musharraf rallies, using official resources, while on the other, it was creating hurdles in the way of opposition's rallies by large scale arrests of its workers.
Khawaja warned that PPP would take account of the expenditure on the May 12 Islamabad rally of the PML (Q), saying that PPP would not allow any further wastage of public money on such rallies. He said that official rally would be manned by government employees and those hired on rent.
