Punjab University Selection Board in a meeting held on Tuesday approved up-gradation of 436 posts of university teachers ie lecturers, assistant professor, associate professor and professors one step above according to the criteria and procedures prescribed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
However, the board meeting has deferred cases of 99 members till they fulfil the HEC criteria. Vice-Chancellor Arshad Mahmood chaired the meeting, which awarded grade-18 to lecturers, 19 to assistant professors, 20 to associate professors and 21 to professors.
It is worth mentioning that the Governor in exercise of powers vested in him under Section 31 of the University of the Punjab Act, 1973 had approved the up-gradation Statute of the University on 17th April, 2007 on the recommendations of the Punjab University Senate dated 10.01.2007 and Syndicate recommendations dated 20.11.2006.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan had earlier upgraded the posts of University Teachers during the Teachers Day on 5th October 2006. The Higher Education Commission had notified on December 5, 2006 that up-gradation of the posts of existing University teachers should be in accordance with the criteria of appointment of university teachers observed by the erstwhile and University Grants Commission eligibility criteria.
