Sindh government would seriously contemplate to support bill, moved by any of the provincial assembly member, for mandatory screening of all would-be mothers with family history of thalassaemia. Sindh Health Minister Syed Sardar Ahmed said this while talking to APP here, on Tuesday.
The government was fully conscious of the fact that the genetic disorder has to be efficiently contained through a multi-pronged approach. "However, prior to any legislation it would be appropriate to involve influential segments of the society to motivate masses about the importance of screening," he said.
Syed Sardar Ahmed maintained that in the mean time provincial health department plans to establish thalassaemia. cum Haemophilia Centres at Civil Hospitals located at Karachi, Sukkur and Hyderabad respectively by early next year. This is mainly due to the fact that large majority of the individuals suffering from these ailments pertain to resource-less segments and that treatment for each of the two conditions is beyond their means.
