Over 4.39 million acres of land would be brought under paddy crop in various rice growing areas of Punjab. Official sources told Business Recorder on Tuesday that Basmati would be sown on more than 3.679 million acres, while other verities of paddy Irri would be cultivated on over 0.627 million acres of land in the province.
In Sialkot district, paddy would be cultivated over 0.44 million acres of land. The Punjab Agriculture Department has formulated a strategy for imparting necessary training to the paddy growers about the preparation of nurseries and cultivation of paddy crop, aimed at attaining the fixed target in the province. Under the programme, the rice growers would be imparted necessary training before the sowing of paddy nurseries and about various verities of paddy in Punjab.
The Agriculture Department has directed the paddy growers to refrain from growing paddy nurseries before May 20 in their respective areas because under the Pest Ordinance, sowing of paddy nurseries was prohibited throughout Punjab.
The Agriculture Department directed the paddy growers to use recommended and authenticated paddy seed for obtaining quality paddy crop and maximum per acre yield, the sources added.
The training programme would be carried out in 1,450 villages of Sialkot, Pasrur, Daska and Sambrial tehsils of Sialkot district shortly. The local Agriculture Department would depute training teams for providing proper guidance, assistance and training to the rice growers in the district.
