Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB) wishes to congratulate the Attock Group of Companies on the auspicious occasion of the ground breaking ceremony of their power project, Attock Gen Ltd. (AGL). This is indeed an important milestone in the development of Pakistan's power sector and PPIB is proud of its role in making it happen.
The "Policy for Power Generation Projects -2002" is an important component of the Government's strategy to accelerate economic growth necessary to reduce poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals, to which Pakistan is committed. Under the Policy, the PPIB currently has a program of 50 private power projects totalling about 13,400 MW requiring around 13 billion US dollars in investment.
AGL's 165 MW project is one of twenty eight (28) projects that have been issued Letters of Interests, and also one of eleven (11) projects with a cumulative capacity of 2042 MW that have already been issued Letters of Support (LOS), and are expected to be commissioned by the year 2009.
The entry of the Attock Group of Companies into power generation, who already have a track record of more than 90 years in the oil sector, is a welcome step. We hope this will enable them to play a more active role in the integrated development of the energy sector of Pakistan. The LOS was issued to the AGL on 27th of February 2007, and today the ground breaking of the project is taking place, which is indeed very satisfying for all of us. We now look forward to the expected commissioning of the project in August 2008.
