National Assembly Standing Committee on Water and Power on Wednesday was briefed on the current acute load shedding problem in Karachi. The meeting chaired by Ghulam Murtaza Maitla, MNA was briefed by representative of KESC.
He said that Karachi has been divided into four groups out of which industrial sector is exempted from load shedding. He informed the Committee that current demand of electricity for this year is 2400 MW while generating capacity is 1150 MW.
He added that Wapda providing 550 MW in daytime, 715 MW for the night while 220 MW being brought from Tepal. He said total 430 MW shortfall recorded. The Chief Executive Gepco and Chief Executive Fesco briefed the committee about the village electrification programme in the areas in detail. The committee appreciated their efforts.
The chairman flood commission briefed the committee in detail about the organisational setup/functions of the commission and also informed the committee that current year normal flood indicators are expected, however, such measures have been taken to prevent of huge losses, he added.
The Member (Water) Wapda apprised the committee about Neelum Jhelum Hydroelectric Project. While briefing the committee he informed that this project would be an important and major milestone in hydropower sector, which will provide annual energy of 5150 million kWh.
He said that with an overall project cost of Rs 128 billion, the project would be completed in a period of eight years. The committee showed annoyance on the absence of Federal Minister for Water and Power and recommended that presence of Federal Minister will ensured in the next meeting.
Besides the Chairman, the members of the Committee attended the meeting included Syed Muhammad Asghar Shah, Muhammad Sanaullah Khan Mastikhel, Sahibzada Muhammad Mehboob Sultan, Dewan Syed Jaffar Hussain Bokhari, Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Ghalib Hussain Domki, Maulana Muhammad Qasim, Mufti Ibrar Sultan, Muhammad Pervez Qureshi, Sardar Shah Jehan Yousaf and Syed Zafar Ali. Shah Pir Muhammad Aslam Bodies also attended the meeting on special invitation.
