Governor Sindh, Dr Ishratul Ibad at a press conference here on Monday disclosed that the engineers of the 'Nishtar Park suicide bombing' had been arrested.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Karachi, Azhar Farooki, present on the occasion, informed the newsmen that Sindh police developing a lead provided by a sensitive federal agency had arrested two persons who were involved in masterminding the Nishtar Park tragedy on April 11, last year.
The accused Mufti Zakir, who is a foreigner, runs Madressahs while the other is Rahmatullah. CCPO said that the accused had association with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and were based in the tribal areas of NWFP.
He said that one accused was already in jail, as he was accused of being involved in the assassination of Allama Hasan Turabi. Police had arrested two more while three were still at large.
Azhar Farooki said that there was no ambiguity regarding the arrests and they had concrete evidence of the accused being involved in the killings. He said that the suicide attacker was recognised through his DNA test. The DNA of his brother and parents were also taken that matched with the bomber. He said that the police had all the details and sooner everything would be brought before public.
The CCPO said that earlier they had a number of leads, which proved to be futile. However, this one given by a federal sensitive agency was successful.
Governor Sindh said that some eight suicide attacks were carried out since 2002-06 in which about 60KG of explosive material was used but the police in various operations seized 3000KG of explosives.
He further said that Pakistan was the frontline state in the war against terror and itself was a victim. Karachi being the economic and political hub of the country was the main target, however, the law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies both federal and provincial were doing their level best with available resources.
About street crimes, Dr Ibad said that such crimes were present everywhere in the world and fight against them was a continuous process. He said that the ratio of street crimes had been reduced but still, they were not satisfied with that. About the presence of Rangers in the province and expenses being incurred in this regard, he said that Sindh was bearing Rs 400 million to maintain the presence of Rangers in Sindh and all the expenses were reimbursed by the federal government.
Defending the presence of Rangers in the province, the governor said they were a helping hand in maintaining law and order. He told the newsmen that May 12 incidents were being investigated by both provincial and federal agencies and as soon as anything was finalised, it would be brought to public.
