The Minister for Industries and Production, Jahangir Khan Tareen, has said that the BHUs (Basic Health Units) are being revamped and are provided with medicines and doctors to ensure basic healthcare facilities to the people in rural areas.
Chairing a steering committee meeting of PPHI (President's Primary Healthcare Initiative) here on Monday, he said that the government was determined to provide basic health facilities to the people at their doorsteps.
All the project directors (PDs) gave progress review of the PPHI in their respective areas. Project Directors of NWFP and FATA apprised the meeting that MoUs have been signed with seven districts and ToPs (Terms of Partnerships) have been inked with three agencies.
Project director Balochistan informed the meeting that PPHI is working in 16 districts and one more district will be added very soon. He further said that PPHI had got very good response in Balochistan and more and more districts were asking for extension of PPHI.
The representative of Sindh told the meeting that PPHI is currently working in 5 districts and 3 more districts will be brought into the ambit of PPHI by July 15, 2007.
He said that FMOs (Female Medical Officers) are available at the BHUs of Sukkur and Kashmore, taken over by PPHI.
Project director Northern Areas (NAs) informed the meeting that PPHI is successfully working in two districts of Nas--Sukkur and Gilgit--and FMOs are available at the BHUs of both districts.
Health Secretary assured the meeting that various healthcare projects launched by the Ministry of Health would be brought into more co-operation and co-ordination with PPHI so as to maximise the effects of all these programs.
The Minister expressed satisfaction with the performance of PPHI, and directed all PDs to expedite the implementation process so that benefits of the project reach the people as early as possible. The meeting was also attended by Kushnood Lashari, Secretary, Health, Farooq Haroon, and other concerned officials.
