'Gehwara' state-of-the-art centres for destitute children are being established at Lahore and Multan at a cost of Rs 34.412 million, while the capacity of the existing Women Development Centre in Model Town will be enhanced at a cost of Rs 128.837 million.
Punjab Minister for Communication and Works, Chaudhry Zaheeruddin Khan disclosed this at a department meeting held to review the pace of construction work on various social welfare schemes at his office, says a press release issued here on Monday.
The meeting was informed that the construction of 'Gehwara' to accommodate 50 children babies each at Lahore and Multan, is in progress. In the current fiscal year, Rs 3.225 million has been spent on the project, while Rs 31.187 million was spent on these schemes during the last fiscal year.
The Women Development Centre in Model Town will now also include a display centre for handicrafts, women bank, nursery classes, gym and library, while Day-care services will also be provided in the centre.
A sum of Rs 16 million has been released for this scheme while Rs 2.18 million has already been spent. The minister said that the government is taking all possible steps for the welfare of women and neglected children. He directed the Chief Engineer (Works) to complete these schemes well in time and ensure utilisation of quality material.
