Pakistan Medical Society (PMS) has urged the Islamic countries to ban the import of medicines, surgical instruments and other equipment from Britain if the British government does not withdraw the award of knighthood conferred upon controversial writer Salman Rushdie.
This was stated by Pakistan Medical Society Chairman Dr Masood Akhtar Sheikh, while addressing a meeting of doctors, here on Thursday. Masood strongly condemned the British government's decision of awarding knighthood to Salman Rushdie.
He urged the Muslims all over the world to completely boycott all types of products, including medicines and surgical instruments of Britain till the withdrawal of knighthood to Rushdie who had hurt the sentiments of 1.6 billion Muslims throughout the world.
Dr Masood Akhtar Sheikh also asked the doctors' community all over the Muslim world to surrender MRCP and FRCP diplomas and degrees awarded by the British Royal colleges in protest against the award of knighthood. He warned if the British government did not withdraw its decision, the relations of the Muslim world with the West would spoil.
He pointed out that Salman Rushdie's knighthood had violated the United Nations Charter, aimed at forging inter-faith harmony and respecting all religions of the world.
