Leader of Opposition in Senate Mian Raza Rabbani has condemned what he called the apathy shown by the federal and Balochistan governments in carrying out relief operation in the cyclone-hit areas.
In a statement issued here on Friday, he said that it was the matter of grave concern that despite warning of the cyclone hitting the coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan, the federal and provincial governments failed to take adequate steps to minimise the sufferings of cyclone-affected people.
"The regime kept making empty announcements and failed to set up relief camps or assisting the people evacuating from areas. Today in Balochistan more than 250,000 people have been rendered homeless or severely affected by the cyclone and are in need of immediate relief which the federal and provincial governments have failed to provide", he said.
The leader of opposition said that people still continue to be marooned and await evacuation, adding at least six union councils in the affected areas have been completely washed out.
He said that the death toll in Balochistan had exceeded 25 people. Rabbani expressed sympathy with the bereaved families and added that the subsequent floods had increased the discharge of the river and a number of dams including Mirani Dam were under threat but officials responsible for protecting the dam were not available.
He said "It is the matter of shame that Prime Minister, federal ministers, chief minister had still not visited the affected areas nor announced adequate relief measures or funds to meet this grave national calamity".
"I have contacted Balochistan Senators Dr Abdul Malik, Shahid Bugti and Abdul Rahim Mandokhel who also expressed their deep dismay at the inaction of the government", he said. Rabbani called upon the government to immediately undertake extensive relief operation in Balochistan and Sindh so as to provide relief aid to the affected people.
