MMA Deputy Secretary General and Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) Naib Ameer Liaqat Baloch has said that President Pervez Musharraf won't be able to achieve his political objectives under the cover of operation against the Lal Masjid and the Jamia Hafsa, because of the country wide hatred against him.
Talking to newsmen before his departure for London to participate in the APC, he said even the Islamabad Burqa drama could not improve the graph of the Musharraf regime's unpopularity.
He expressed the view that the APC would be able to chalk out a joint line of action against the military dictatorship. Liaqat Baloch said the MMA leaders, including Maulana Fazl-ur-Rahman, Muhammad Akram Khan Durrani, Maulana Abdul Ghafur Haideri along with him, had made desperate efforts to avoid killing of innocent people in the brute use of force by the Rangers and other law-enforcement agencies through which the military dictatorship wanted to please America and the West.
Other Ulema, including MNA Mian Muhammad Aslam of MMA from Islamabad, also tried to resolve the Lal Masjid issue through mutual understanding and dialogue and maintain peace and tranquillity in the federal capital, however, the government arrested Mian Muhammad Aslam and sabotaged all these efforts.
The MMA leader said it was unfortunate that the Lal Masjid leadership fell to the government trap because of its simplicity and inflexible behaviour; whereas the arrest of Maulana Abdul Aziz was shocking for all those supporting his philosophy.
He, however, said the military rulers pushed the issue to a bloody end in a pre-planned manner with the timings suited to them politically. Replying to a question, Liaqat Baloch said the rulers had been creating confusion in the mind of the religious forces in a pre-planned manner. He, however, believed that after the Lal Masjid operation, the religious circles would come out with the unanimous opinion that the military dictatorship is the root cause of all evils and problems.
He said the MMA firmly believed that the proper and the durable course for the enforcement of the Shariah is the constitutional and democratic path with the support of public opinion. All the schools of Islamic thought and the religious forces will have to make a joint struggle against the secular forces within the country and at the international level to realise this cherished goal.
