President Pervez Musharraf has said that both long-term and short-term strategies will be adopted to mitigate sufferings of the rain and flood-affected people of Shahdadkot and Qambar districts in Sindh.
Addressing the affected people on Saturday at Kappu Saeed Khan near Shahdadkot, he said that long-term strategy plans would be prepared in consultation with the provincial government to control water flow from hill torrents as well as to strengthen the flood protection bund.
For immediate relief, he said, Rs 15,000 would be given to each house destroyed, followed by a complete and proper assessment of damage, after which more assistance would be given to help them construct new houses. The President said that all resources would be utilised to help rehabilitate the affected people. He said he would convert this challenge into opportunities.
He appreciated the bravery demonstrated by the people of these areas to face flood damage. He also lauded the services of Pakistan Army, Rangers, and civil administration for helping the affected people. Earlier, he attended a briefing about rain and flood situation in north-western region of Sindh at Moenjodaro airport, near Larkana.
The General Officer Commanding Pannu Aqil, Major General Mumtaz Ahmed Bajwa, and Sindh Irrigation Minister Nadir Akmal Leghari informed him of various steps being taken to protect the people in Shahdadkot and Qambar areas.:
Addressing the affectees of flood and rains in Qubo Said Khan in District Qambar-Shahdadkot on Saturday during a visit to the affected areas, he distributed a sum of Rs 2,000 each among the affectees present on the occasion.
General Musharraf said that he had an aerial view of the area and was pained to see the losses due to flash flood and rains there. He said that he was with the people of the area in their hour of need. He said that it was his promise that the people of the affected area would get more than what they have lost.
Musharraf said that national resources would be utilised for provision of relief to the affectees. He criticised those who speak against the armed forces of the country and said that the armed forces are of the whole country and not of any province.
The President said that there are some 70,000 people from Sindh in the Army. He said that the armed forces of Pakistan are for the service to the entire nation. Earlier, the President met with the affectees who praised the efforts of the armed forces and the provincial government towards relief work. Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, and Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim were also present on the occasion.
