Sindh Irrigation Department with the assistance of Pakistan Army has plugged two breaches in the right bank of Saifullah Magsi branch of N.W. Canal of Sukkur Barrage at RD 214 and pressure of water on this canal has been reduced.
Federal Flood Commission sources told Business Recorder here on Saturday due to heavy pressure of flood water on the canal from Balochistan, huge overtopping on the left bank of Saifullah Magsi branch resulted in three breaches at RD 215, RD 216 & RD 217 which are being plugged. Breach caused in the Panwaro Distributary (Off-taking channel of Warah Branch Canal) at RD 63 has also been plugged.
Sources said at the moment banks of Warah Canal are being further strengthened, however, pressure of flood water was mounting on he bank of Naseer distributary of Wara Branch and efforts were underway to control the situation and save the area from further flooding.
Level of water in MNV drain has risen to 1 foot and situation was becoming alarming. Sindh Irrigation Department along with the assistance of Pak Army field formations is making all efforts to control the situation.
RIVERS POSITION According to a report o the Indus River Regulatory Authority, river Kabul at Warsak and Nowshera continues to flow in medium flood besides in a very high flood at Adezai Bridge in NWFP.
River Indus was in low flood at Guddu on Saturday morning with receding trend.
Rest of the main rivers (ie river Indus except for Guddu and rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi & Sutlej) are flowing normal. The latest actual river indicate reservoir elevations of Tarbela Mangla Dams are presently at 1505.35 ft. and 1192.65 ft. respectively just 44 ft. and 9.35 ft. below their respective maximum conservation levels of 1550.00 ft. and 1202.00 ft.
In Balochistan present water level in Mirani Dam, Balochistan, is 245.10 feet against its highest flood level of 276.00 feet and storage level of Hub Dam is 330.30 feet against its maximum conservation level of 339.50 feet.
In the Federal Capital Territory, storage level of Simly Dam is 2295.35 feet against its maximum level of 2310.00 feet. storage level of Rawal Dam is 1748.60 feet against its maximum conservation level of 1752.00 feet whereas present storage level of Khanpur Dam is 1970.70 feet against its maximum level of 1982.00 feet.
Significant rainfall events reported for the past 24 hours include: Haripur =69 mm, Islamabad = 50 mm, Tarbela = 44 mm, Kallar = 38 mm, Mandi-Bahuddin 30 mm, Baba Shah Jalal (Chakwal) = 28 mm & Rawalpindi 23 mm.
MONSOON WEATHER ADVISORY Punjab; Islamabad & Kashmir Catchment Areas including Earthquake Affected Areas and NWFP: Widespread Monsoon rains at times heavy to very heavy accompanied with strong gusty winds are expected in most parts of the above mentioned areas during the next 2-days.
SINDH: Rain / thundershower and strong gusty winds are likely at many places in Sindh especially South and Southeast Sindh between evening 8th - 10th July 2007 (Probability 60%).
BALOCHISTAN: Eastern Balochistan is likely to receive rains, at times heavy between evening 8th - 10th July 2007 (Probability 60%).
