As many as 24 persons died and 13 suffered injuries due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rain in the district on late Saturday night. The incident occurred in union council Jeejal of the district as several houses were buried under avalanche. The rescue operation was carried out by local people, who removed 23 bodies.
The injured were rushed to the district headquarter hospital. Some of the victims have been identified as Saboor, Rahmo Bibi, Abdur Rahman, Sahbo Khan, Shahzad, Abdul Mannan, Abdullah, Naheed Bibi, Dukhtar Bibi, Talah, Hajra Bibi, Gulnar Bibi, Abdul Haq, Abdul Qayyum, Farah Bibi, Hamail Bibi, Rubina Bibi and Jainan.
Superintendent of police Kohistan Alam Zaib Khan told APP by phone that 13 people of a family were killed in Kiyal whereas nine of another family killed while flash floods caused by lightening swept away mud houses.
He said local volunteers along with police personnel carried out the rescue operation.
He said that fresh rains had destroyed a portion of Karakuram Highway, which would require about two days to get it repaired. Huge boulders and heavy landsliding blocked Karakuram Highway at nine points, Frontier Works Organisation sources said. FWO personnel along with machinery have rushed to the site and started operation to restore the traffic.
