Over 2.2 million people have been affected in the recent floods in Balochistan, while around 250,000 people are now homeless and property worth billions of rupees in different areas of the province destroyed.
These views were expressed by Mir Abdul Karim Nosharwani, Vice-President of the ruling Balochistan Muslim League and former provincial minister while talking to media here on Wednesday. He said that over 80 percent area of district Kharan was badly affected and more than 50,000 homeless people of this area were still waiting for relief from their Pakistan brethren.
Giving details, he said that electric supply system, tube-wells, hospitals, schools and over 200 water supply schemes had been destroyed in the flood. Now the affected people of the area, living under open sky without any shelter, he said, adding they were facing acute shortage of food, medicine and other necessary items.
He said all the roads of the area had been damaged and there was no road link between district headquarter and the five union councils. Appealing to the people of Karachi to come forward and provide food items, medicine and shelters for their brethren, he feared if timely relief was not provided to them, hundreds of people might die of hunger and various diseases.
He lauded the people of Karachi for their historic contribution for earthquake affectees of Azad Kashmir and Northern Areas, and expressed the hope that they would not disappoint the flood-affected people of Balochistan.
He appealed to Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain, Memon community, donor agencies and other brotherly people of this mega city to donate generously for the flood victims of Balochistan. He said that a relief package of Rs 15,000 per affectee was not enough and around Rs 75,000 to Rs 80,000 was needed for rehabilitation of each affected family.
