All ceremonies scheduled to be held in connection with Population Day have been cancelled and the money for expected expenditure amounting Rs 3.5 million will be spent on rehabilitation of the flood victims.
This was stated by Punjab Minister for Population Welfare, Mrs Naseem Lodhi while addressing a press conference regarding the World Population Day at Secretariat Office here on Wednesday. Secretary Kazi Afaq Hussain and DG Khalid Yousaf were also present. She said that free medical camps will be set up under the supervision of women medical officers to provide first aid and free medicines to the flood victims.
The minister observed that the population explosion is cause for concern and a big hurdle in the way of national progress and development, as diminishing resources cannot continue to cope with the rising demand, adding that no society can progress without containing population growth. The minister also urged Ulema, intellectuals and NGOs, especially women, to spread awareness about the necessity of small families among the masses at the local community level.
She said that about 8,000 Ulema, Khateebs and Imam of mosques have been imparted training to create awareness among the people about the benefits of small family, while 4,000 more Ulema will be provided training. Secretary Population Welfare Punjab, Kazi Afaq said that 54 reproductive health services centres have been set up and another 53 are under construction, which will be functional in 2-3 months.
He said that 115 newly procured vehicles have been provided to medical service units (MSUs) in various districts, while recruitment of 79 women medical officers has also been completed to head the MSUs, while further recruitment is in progress. As many as 2,422 male mobilisers have been recruited, he added.
