The work of laying 36- and 48-inch 19 km long water pipeline for carrying additional 6 million gallons per day (mgd) water has been started at a cost of Rs 387.2 million for 24-hour supply to Baldia Town.
The Baldia Town is an area, which is faced with water shortage for the last 30 years for its being at the tail-end, and Karachi Nazim Mustafa Kamal has directed laying of this pipeline for additional water supply to the area. The KWSB Additional Vice-Chairman and MPA Mohammed Moin Khan, inspected the pipe laying work on Saturday.
On the occasion, he was informed that the pipeline has been so designed that there would be no chance of taking out illegal connection. This water main will emerge from Hub reservoir and would run through Northern Bypass to Baldia Town. It will be laid with the use of 12,000 metres mild steel pipes of 48-inch dia(meter) and 7000 metres prestressed concrete 36-inch dia pipes.
The AVC directed the engineers to complete the work on a fast track, maintaining quality of work. He called for ensuring regular supply of pipes from City government's pipe factory and said shortage of pipes should not occur. For this project, he said, mild steel and prestressed pipes have been selected which have 100-year physical age.
