About 92 percent people in urban areas of the country are aware of the AIDS while only 8 percent expressed their ignorance about the disease in a survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan. The survey to evaluate the awareness about AIDS among urban population was based on opinion ascertained from a sample group of 11,000 in cities and towns across the country in all four provinces.
Respondents were asked if they had ever heard or read about the deadly disease. About 92 percent said they were aware of the disease, while only 8 percent drew a blank.
About 84 percent of the respondents, who had heard or read about AIDS, said the disease posed a serious threat to the world, whereas 10 percent were of the view that it posed only a minimal threat. About 1 percent of the respondents said that they had no idea about it, the survey says.
When the people were asked whether AIDS posed any serious threat to the people in Pakistan, the majority of the respondents (65 percent) said it posed a serious threat. About 21 percent said it posed a little threat, while 5 percent said it was not dangerous at all. Further 9 percent said that they did not know about that particular issue.
Gallup Pakistan, an affiliate of Gallup International, said the survey targeted statistically selected people of all ages, income groups and educational levels.
