The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Sindh, extracted Rs 527.511 million from looters of national wealth through plea bargain and the voluntary return and deposited the same into the national kitty during last year. According to NAB Sind, Rs 446.433 million was recovered through plea bargain and Rs 81.118 million through voluntary return.
Last year, five accused consented to return the money through the plea bargain and three through the voluntary return. According to NAB annual report, it received 4,506 complaints last year, out of which 1,375 were against government employees, 35 against politicians, and 1,792 against others.
NAB ordered 113 inquiries out of which 36 inquiries were against the government employees of Grade 17-22 and 31 inquiries against Grade-16 and below, while 28 were against businessmen and industrialists.
At the year-end on December 31, 2006, a special NAB team set up camp office in the AG Sindh Office to detect financial irregularities and corruption committed till the year-end and sent its detailed report to high authorities concerned for further action.
Another special NAB team looked into the illegal reti-bajri lifting work from Gadap and Bin Qasim towns and after secret inquiry sent its report to authorities concerned as a result of which a high level inquiry started against those involved in this illegal trade.
Last year, the Bureau initiated 67 investigations against government officials and others on charges of malpractice and corruption. Of the total, 17 investigations were against officers of 17 to 22 and 15 against Grade-16 and below officers. NAB prepared 45 references and further action on 145 investigations was in progress.
