Polythene bags, comprise 15 percent of the total 8,000 tons of garbage, are being generated in the city every day, according to National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH).
These bags not only create problems in city's sewerage system, but also cause health problems if food items like oil, ghee, milk and fast food are packed in these polythene bags.
In a statement to the press here on Monday, NFEH said that due to wide spread use of polythene bags, diseases like cancer, soar throat and stomach problems were spreading.
It said that various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of the city had urged the Sindh governor, provincial minister for environment and the City Nazim to strictly enforce the ban and take notice of free usage of such bags.
NFEH said that provincial and city governments had imposed a ban on the use of these bags due to their threat to environment. The government had spent millions of rupees since March this year on creating awareness in this regard, but suddenly the campaign stopped in May and the sale of polythene bags has restarted, particularly at the shopping centres and Sunday bazaars.
