The Governor NWFP Lieutenant General Ali Mohammed Jan Aurakzai (Retd) on Wednesday constituted a committee headed by Nazim, City District government Peshawar for streamlining matters relating to restoration of historic gates and wall of the city.
The decision into this effect was taken during a meeting regarding preservation and restoration of historical buildings and sites in Peshawar City. He was appreciative of the restoration of six out of sixteen historic gates and certain portions of historic city wall by the City District government and desired that the efforts should be continued on more pragmatic and solid lines.
Terming the initiative a great service to the city, he said it would lead to generate economic activities through promotion of tourism. The Governor, however, further desired that an international seminar should also be arranged in Peshawar not only to get more input in the shape of technical and expert opinions, but also, manage resources to translate the vision into reality as well.
"Peshawar is highly rich in respect of rare historical heritage and we must have to develop proper strategy to preserve that in the best interest of the people and the country," said the governor.
Besides the Secretary to Governor, Azmat Hanif, the meeting was also attended by Provincial Secretary, Sports, Culture, Tourism, Youth Affairs, Archaeology and Museums, Attaullah Khan, District Nazim Haji Ghulam Ali as well a volunteer Lieutenant Colonel Mian Liaquat Shah (Retd).
Meanwhile, the meeting was informed that a number of times old sites and buildings, having great historical importance and attraction for promotion of tourism and research activities are in shambles in Peshawar, which require immediate attention and concrete efforts towards their preservation and rehabilitation.
