Raziq Bugti gunned down

The spokesman of Balochistan government, Raziq Bugti, was killed in an attack on Friday. According to reports, Raziq Bugti was in his vehicle on Zargoon Road near GPO when some unidentified people opened indiscriminate firing on him and he was killed on the spot while the vehicle was also badly damaged, police said.
It was also told that the deceased was himself driving the vehicle at the time of attack by some unidentified persons. Soon after the incident, ambulances and the personnel of security forces reached the spot and started the investigation.
Raziq Bugti (53) was appointed spokesman of the Balochistan government some four years ago and used to brief media about the latest situation of the province. No arrest was made so far.
Late Abdul Raziq Bugti, spokesman of Balochistan government was born in Bakar area in Dera Bugti district in 1950s. Later, shifted to Sibi where he got primary education and did his post-graduation in Political Science from Punjab University.
Raziq Bugti started political struggle during his student life and remained active in student politics in college and university. He remained Central Chairman of Baloch Students Organisation (BSO) in 1970s, then joined National Awami Party subsequently Pakistan National Party in the same decade formed by Mir Gaus Bux Bizenjo. His main political struggle moved around gaining Baloch rights and political autonomy.
Raziq Bugti remained in exile for ten years in Afghanistan during General Zia-ul-Haq regime and returned to homeland in 1988 after the death of General Zia. When Ajmal Khattak revived National Awami Party, he also joined. But presently he was not associated with any political party.
Raziq had an intellectual mind and literary and political approach with some other traits of his personality became evident and visible when he was appointed as Media Consultant to Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Muhammad Yousaf and Spokesman of Balochistan Government in 2003.
When the government took action against miscreants in December 2005 in the province, Raziq Bugti boldly defended the action of the government. At around the same time, he also launched unprecedented development projects in Dera Bugti particularly in its deprived Bakar area.
Not only he clearly defended the government policies in mega development projects, establishment of Gwadar port and actions of the government in Dera Bugti and Kohlu, but also defended the government's policies through his write ups contributing to national newspapers.
He believed that the main cause of backwardness of Baloch was Sardari system based on closed society. He extremely opposed the Sardari system and supported initiation of mega development projects aimed at setting up open society and provide opportunities to common deprived man to come forward and live a respectable life.
He remained very active in media campaign when two tribes Luni and Marri announced end of their animosities and agreed for starting coalmining in Chamalang (bordering town of Kohlu and Loralai districts) coalfield, the second biggest coal reserve field in Asia.
Raziq Bugti was also remained active and performed his responsibilities while launching media campaign during the recent cyclone Yemyin and floods in the province.
