Senate Committee on Rules of Procedure and Privileges met here on Friday to discuss formation of rules, keeping in view future requirements of the parliament. The meeting was presided over by the Committee Chairman Senator Syed Tahir Hussain Mashhadi.
The committee considered various amendments proposed in the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate-1988 and unanimously approved some important amendments for incorporation in the existing rules.
The meeting reviewed the proposed amendments on merit and finalised them in a spirit of accommodation and utmost co-operation, keeping in view not only the present working but also the future requirements of the Parliament.
Speaking on the occasion, Tahir Hussain stressed the need that supremacy, dignity and sanctity of the elected Parliament must be maintained at all costs by ensuring proper decorum and due observance of the Rules of Procedure and Privileges.
He said that the Committee has been assigned a monumental task, which he said must be accomplished with a great care adding that the task was related to the working of an elected Parliament.
He said that the elected parliament symbolised the will of the people, adding that the new rules will regulate the functioning of Senate for decades to come. The Chairman lauded the contribution and interest taken by the participants, adding that it was due to their efforts that the task-become much easier and beneficial for transparent democracy in the country.
Among others, the meeting was attended by Senators Kamil Ali, Agha, Dr Muhammad Ismail Buledi, Chaudhry Muhammad Anwar Bhinder, Raza Muhammad Raza, Dr Khalid Ranjha, Ms Saadia Abbasi, Naeem Hussain Chattha, S M Zafar, Kamran Murtaza and Asfandyar Wali Khan besides the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Dr Sher Afghan Khan Niazi, Secretary Senate, Raja Muhammad Amin and senior officials of Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs.
