A cancer hospital of international standard is being established in the provincial metropolis for which land has been acquired. Free medical treatment would be extended to the poor in the hospital said, Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi in his speech at an inaugural ceremony of causality and emergency ward of Services Hospital here on Tuesday.
"The government is using billions of rupees on the provision of modern and quality health services to the masses, while free treatment is being given to the patients in emergency wards of all hospitals. Even costly medicines are being provided free of charge," he said, adding that because of attractive salaries and other facilities, doctors were now present in 90 percent of rural and basic health centres.
He said an emergency block of the Services Hospital had been improved at a cost of Rs 330 million and its bed capacity has been increased from 60 to 150. He also announced Rs 100 million for the provision of new machinery for the Services Hospital and the construction of radiology and ENT blocks.
He added that four new operation theaters had been set up in the emergency ward. A digital radiology, CT Scan, blood bank, pathology lab, ICU, 20-bed CCU and an air-conditioned waiting room have also been set up for the attendants of patients. He said that state-of-the-art health facilities are being extended in the emergency wards of the hospitals.
The government is upgrading emergency wards on priority basis as medical assistance to the patients in the emergency wards helps in their recovery. In addition to necessary facilities to the doctors and staff, the government was also ensuring availability of medicines at health centers. Therefore, doctors should also pay attention to the treatment of the ailing humanity and behave with the patients politely, he said. In order to provide timely relief to the victims of accidents and calamities, the scope of Rescue Service 1122 is being extended to Rawalpindi, Mutlan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Gujranwala so that maximum people could benefit from this service. A modern fire fighting service has also been initiated and an advanced training academy has been established for the rescuers.
The government was also concentrating on promoting medical education. Kind Edward Medical College has been given the status of a university and that two new universities and three medical colleges have been set up in Punjab while a medical college is also being constructed adjacent to Lahore General Hospital.
He said that Multan Institute of Cardiology has become operational while construction of a modern cardiac center in Faisalabad has been completed. He also announced that foundation stone of an institute of cardiology would be laid in Wazirabad on August 14. Burn units have also been established in Multan and Lahore whereas similar units are being established in other cities of the province as well. Adding that the system of training of nurses has been upgraded, he said addressing at the ceremony.
Principal Services Hospital Professor Faisal Masood said in his speech that the emergency ward of Services Hospital has been extended under Chief Minister's SEMS programme and separate floors has been earmarked for medical and surgical emergency.
He said that on the instructions of Chief Minister, free medicines and facilities of operations are being given to the patients in the emergency wards and the system of patient's slip and the treatment records has been computerised.
