Chancellor Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, Z.A Mizami has said that if the new generation is inculcated with wit, humour and recreational literature, it would help promote healthy literary trends. He was speaking while presiding over the "Tanz-o-Mazah" conference-2007 held here under the auspices of Pakistan Academy of Letters (PAL).
He pointed out that a blooming and pleasant literature was as much essential as serious literature. Speaking on the occasion as chief guest Zakir Ali Khan said that a humorist presents even serious topics with a pleasant sense but give out thoughtful views just out of humour.
He recalled that in Urdu poetry, right from Akbar Allahabadi to Syed Zamir Jaffery and Dilawar Fagar, the humorous poets made valuable contributions towards transformation and reformation while people like Mushaffaq Khawaja to Mushtaq Ahmed Yusufi, all gave philosophical depth to humour.
The Resident Director Pakistan Academy of Letters, Agha Noor Mohammed Pathan in his welcome address said that while people of Karachi are feeling depressed and frustrated with load-shedding, traffic jam problems, rising cost of living and other day-to-day problems of life, need was felt for recreational literary programmes along side the serious literary activities and this conference was part of the same.
