Networking gear maker D-Link Corp plans to start selling a media device to link televisions and computers that can connect to the fastest type of Wi-Fi networks, a company spokesman said on Friday.
The D-Link media device will run on the same wireless standard as Apple Inc's Apple TV and go on sale in time for this year's holiday season, company spokesman Les Goldberg told Reuters.
D-Link already sells these media devices, but they run at slower speeds than the Apple product, which is ahead of the rest of the industry. Goldberg said the new product will sell for $300, the same as the entry-level Apple TV model and go on sale in the United States during the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter before it starts selling it in other countries.
NetGear Inc another networking equipment provider, said on Friday it will hold off on releasing a version of its "Digital Entertainer" media player using that faster standard.
