Representative Medical Officer World Health Organisation for Sindh Dr Yehia Mostafa said that the cases of polio have considerably decreased in Pakistan with the continued efforts of WHO.
He was talking to APP here on August 7, said except Pakistan, Nigeria, India and Afghanistan polio has been completely eradicated from all the countries of the world.
Yehia said that a campaign against polio was launched in Pakistan in 1994 when there were 23,000 cases of polio on record and with the continued efforts of WHO and Health Department of Pakistan just 11 cases of polio surfaced including four cases in Sindh.
Dr Yehia said the campaign has to continue till the disease completely eradicated from the neighbouring countries India and Afghanistan.
He said that basic Immunisation course for five diseases was essential in the country to control the deadly diseases. He said that knowledge of Immunisation Course and the awareness about the diseases was essential for parents in order to overcome the problems in this regard.
Earlier Dr Yehia on his arrival visited the Pediatric Ward of Nawabshah Medical College Hospital and inaugurated three-day anti polio campaign by administrating polio drops to children under five years age.
Later talking to APP, Executive District Officer Dr Qazi Arif said that the district has a population of 24,0603 children below five years age out of total population of the district 12,60,500.
He said that district has been divided into 18 zones and 600 teams having 1125 members were dispatched to nook and corner of the district to administer Polio drops and added that teams were provided 14436 Polio vials. Qazi said that polio was eradicated from the district four years ago and Nawabshah was now polio free district.
