President of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Majyd Aziz has requested President Musharraf to appoint a deputy governor in Sindh province. He stated this while addressing sixth meeting of housing and construction sub-committee of KCCI here on Friday.
He said that deputy governor should be held responsible to look after problems of Karachi only. He said that present set-up of the city is governed by around 13 differed agencies, including seven cantonment boards. This situation has jeopardised all development works.
He said that the City Nazim, Mustafa Kamal has planned sewerage line development programme for areas coming under his control whereas the management of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) made no plan creating hindrance in flow of sewerage water.
The president said that during recent heavy rains DHA and Cantonment Board areas were in pitiable condition. Residents of the area have been facing difficulties in getting out of their houses and reaching work places, he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Housing and Construction Sub-committee, Munir Sultan demanded that total control of the city should be handed over to City Nazim. He criticised working of the Cantonment Boards and said that the areas come under their control presenting a devastated look. Encroachments on its peak, roads are damaged and no sewerage system exists, he alleged.
He lauds the role of Chief Controller, Karachi Building Control Authority (KBCA) Raoof Akhtar Farooqi who made tremendous efforts to control unauthorised construction in the city. He said that officials of KBCA are directly responsible for using sub-standard material and steel in ongoing construction projects. In this regard he suggested that a consultative committee should be constituted.
