Any political party supporting dictatorship in the country will be resisted by lawyers, said the Vice Chairman of Pakistan Bar Council, Aziz Akbar Baig, at a seminar titled 'Current Political Situation and Future of the Country', organised by South Asia Partnership (SAP) here on Friday.
He said that lawyers would plan the second phase of their movement on September 1 to root out the current 'dictatorial system' in the country. He said the lawyers' movement reflected the views of the poor who were being exploited by generals for 40 years. He said, "The time has come to nab the top tier of the military regime."
He criticised the political parties as weak and said their role against the government was not enough. Ahmad Awais said dictatorial system was like the acacia (kikar) and banyan (bohr) trees which could not benefit anyone. He said that President General Pervez Musharraf claimed to have inculcated enlightened moderation in the country's system, but had ignored the essence of democracy.
He said judicial activism would bring about a 'soft revolution' in the country. Lahore Bar Association (LBA) secretary Shamim Malik criticised political parties and said that they did not want to really empower people. He said that politicians only want to strengthen themselves and their parties.
