French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday repeated his call for improved transparency in financial markets and said the recent market turmoil could happen again unless steps were taken. Sarkozy has called for a discussion of new measures to increase transparency at the meeting of G7 finance minister in Washington in October.
"Financial crises, like those we have just suffered could happen again if the leaders of big countries do not choose to lead a resolute and concerted action in favour of transparency and regulation of international markets," Sarkozy said in a speech to French ambassadors. He said he wanted a financial system which favoured "wealth creation and not speculation".
