The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered district police officer (DPO) Sargodha to report to the court by September 14 about the contaminated water in Chanab Nagar in Jhang which resulted in death of many people and cattle.
The court had already appointed a local commission to inspect the area in Chenab Nagar where the contaminated water discharged into a river drain from chemical factory Criston Lion Chemical Factory.
The court picked Advocate Syed Mansoor Ali Shah the local commission, ordering him to report by September 14. The court had started hearing a case on the deaths of several people and cattle dying from the poisonous water in Chanab Nagar. It had taken a suo moto notice on an appeal by Shafqat Baloch and others. The applicants told the court that the only source of water for Chanab Nagar and their cattle was the Jhang River.
They claimed that some months ago the Criston Lion Chemical Factory had started draining out the poisonous wastewater in the river, killing several people and cattle. They said the water had become a serious threat to the public and animals.
They said many diseases had erupted because of the water pollution. They requested the court to stop the factory owner from draining the poisonous water in the river and take a legal action against him for depriving the people of clean drinking water.
