People belonging to various walks of life especially the exporter community has expressed deep concern over the slow pace of construction work on Sialkot-Wazirabad road costing Rs 880 million. Only 40 percent work on this 37-kilometer long road had so far been completed in 28 months whereas its completion time was one year.
It may be mentioned that Punjab chief minister performed stone laying ceremony of converting Sialkot-Wazirabad road into dual carriageway on 1st April 2005 but unfortunately the work on the road has been going on in interval whereas funds for the completion of this project are available but there are no signs of its completion in near future.
The construction is being carried out in a haphazard manner as a result of which the people were facing serious hardships while travelling on Sialkot-Wazirabad road. Sialkot Dry Port, Sialkot Export Processing Zone, and Sialkot International Airport are located on this track while mega project of Pak-Swedish Engineering University is being constructed in the same area.
The concept of widening of the road is to ensure smooth flow of traffic especially the speedy handling of exportable consignments from Sialkot Dry Port and provide easy access to Sialkot International Airport.
The people belonging to Sialkot and Sambrial alleged that contractor has used substandard material in the construction of Sialkot-Wazirabad road as a result of which the roadway is in rutted condition. It was very astonishing that the concerned authorities were reluctant to visit the spot to inquire about the delay in the completion of this mega project, they said. The people of Sambrial are confronting with multifarious problems including health hazard due to incomplete road and heavy dust.
They appealed to the Punjab chief minister and other high ups to take immediate steps for holding probe in long delay and non-completion of Sialkot-Wazirabad road.
Meanwhile, when contacted with Sialkot District Nazim Muhammad Akmal Cheema, he said that undoubtedly the delay in the completion of road was multiplying the problems not only for the exporters but also for the general public. We are pursuing for the early completion of the road and hopefully Sialkot-Wazirabad road would be accomplished in next six months, Cheema said.
