Major stock markets outside the United States ended on Tuesday.
EUROPE STOCKS EXCHANGE: A rally in Deutsche Bank shares and US data, which lifted expectations of a Fed interest rate cut, cheered European stock markets, with the benchmark index hitting a four-week high. Shares in Deutsche Bank rose 2.9 percent to a two-week high after Josef Ackermann, chief executive of Germany's biggest bank, said the outlook for banks had begun to brighten after weeks of credit market turmoil.
The DJ Stoxx banks index rose 0.7 percent, with Societe Generale up 2.1 percent and CS Group adding 1.8 percent. "It is the positive outlook that supports the (Deutsche Bank) share price, the tendency that markets seem to stabilise again and that business is going well," WestLB analyst Georg Kanders said. "It is all not as bad as one would have thought." The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares rose 0.66 percent to 1,549.41 points - its highest close since August 8 - having been down as much as 0.7 percent earlier.
FRANKFURT STOCKS EXCHANGE: The DAX index ended at 7,721.77 points, up 73.19 or 0.96 percent.
PARIS STOCKS EXCHANGE: The CAC-40 index closed at 5,672.72 points, up 21.45 or 0.38 percent.
ZURICH STOCKS EXCHANGE: The Swiss market index closed at 8,966.35 points, up 88.55 or 1.00 percent.
MILAN STOCKS EXCHANGE: The All Share Mibtel index closed at 31,451 points, up 63 or 0.20 percent.
SYDNEY STOCKS EXCHANGE: Shares firmed 0.41 percent as banks and retailers such as Woolworths Ltd rose on the back of strong domestic economic growth numbers. The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index climbed 26.0 points to close at 6,293.3.
JOHANNESBURG STOCKS EXCHANGE: Stocks ended flat, failing to receive direction from both US and European markets, while the rand was weaker as investors pulled back from high-risk markets. The All-share index closed at 29,051.96 points, up 164.48 or 0.57 percent. The All Gold index closed at 2,368.89 points, up 32.18 or 1.38 percent, while the Industrial index closed at 20,425.63 points, down 57.2 or 0.28 percent.
