Pakistan Jute Mills Association (PJMA) has lauded the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Authority (Smeda) for implementing industrial energy efficiency programmes and conducting energy audits for ultimate productivity improvement in collaboration with German agency GTZ.
Chairman Humayun Mazhar, addressing a seminar on "renewable energy and energy efficiency programme" held with Smeda the other day at the association's office, said the jute industry should be given priority in the energy conservation programme.
An overview regarding Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Programme (REEE) was given to the members of Jute Sector by Rana Muhammad Wajid (Smeda) & Mr Khawar Rashid (GTZ) on this occasion.
Success stories and outcomes as a result of energy audits done in the past few months (8 textile units) were shared. On behalf of Smeda Iqbal Kidwai, General Manager, Out-Reach and Fayyaz Riaz, DGM discussed with stakeholders the possibility to include the Jute sector in the Energy auditing process in the future by selecting two or three model units under this REEE programme.
Mazhar said the jute industry was contributing Rs 4 billion to GDP besides earning valuable foreign exchange of Rs 900 million by exporting non-traditional products. He said, "If jute industry is given government's support through technical & financial assistance, it can produce remarkable results."
He appreciated the efforts of Smeda and GTZ for implementing industrial energy efficiency programmes and conducting energy audits for ultimate productivity improvement.
