The government has decided to divide the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) into two divisions - Water and Power - to check the rapidly increasing power-cuts.
"The Kala Bagh Dam cannot be constructed without a national consensus because the provinces have reservations about the issue," Federal Minister for Water and Power Liaqat Jatoi told reporters here on Thursday at the Wapda House.
He said, "The federation is more conspicuous, and nobody can deny the importance of it. The four provinces are the basic elements of it. The reservations of the providence will be eradicated and the leaderships of political parties will be taken into confidence before the construction of the Kala Bagh dam."
He also said financial and administrative autonomy would be given to the electricity distributions companies, because "we are under pressure from international donor agencies World Bank and Asian Bank to do so."
The minister said eight agreements had been signed with companies of international and national repute and letter of interests has also been issued to 16 companies to minimise the power breakdown. He said restructuring the Wapda would be done in a comprehensive manner just to provide facilities to consumers.
