Lawyers have decided to strongly resist President General Pervez Musharraf's attempt to re-elect himself with or without uniform. This was stated by President High Court Bar, Habib-ullah Shakir and General Secretary Rana Naveed Akhtar while addressing a press conference here on Thursday.
They said that President should step down to pave the way for transparent and impartial elections. They also demanded of the president to allow the exiled political leaders to return to Pakistan and take part in the next general elections.
Lawyers alleged that Nawaz Sharif was abducted and sent to Saudi Arabia against his will. They announced that they would observe a full-day strike when the President would file his nomination papers for office of president.
They said that they would surround the office of the election commissioner during the scrutiny of nomination papers. Lawyers also demanded of the government to take action against the Muttahida Quami Movement and the Sindh chief minister for allegedly murdering advocate Raja Riaz.
They also demanded action against MQM chief Altaf Hussain, the IGP Sindh and the DIG Rangers for allegedly sabotaging the reception hosted in honour of the chief justice of Pakistan on May 12 in Karachi.
Habib-ullah Shakir scathed Justice (Retd) Malik Muhammad Qayyum's appointment as Attorney General of Pakistan, saying it aimed at creating a rift in the legal fraternity and the government was hatching a conspiracy against the judiciary.
