City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal has imposed ban on operation of 2-stroke motor rickshaws on 15.2 Km Shahra-e-Pakistan and 6.0 km M A Jinnah road under section 144 CrPC.
City District Government Karachi (CDGK) on Thursday notified that city nazim has imposed the ban on 2-stroke rickshaws, which would come into force with effect from September 14 2007 and shall remain in force till further orders.
Ban has been imposed in view of Supreme Court's Suo motu notice four years ago in case No 03 of 2003 regarding deteriorating Environmental Pollution and three year old High Court of Sindh's CP No D-173/ 2004 filed against government of Sindh and others.
City Nazim has said that 2-stroke rickshaws were responsible for gross increasing air pollution levels due to inherent inefficiencies of their engine type and deficient silencers causing excessive levels of noise pollution.
Syed Mustafa Kamal said that he was satisfied to announce the ban as part of immediate measures to arrest the problem initially on the most travelled thoroughfares of the city. Ban on operation of rickshaw has been imposed on Shahra-e-Pakistan ie from Sohrab Goth to Tower and Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road ie from Gurumandir to MV tower.
